Did Stanley Kubrick's obsessive reshoots make the movies better?

We all know that Kubrick was a nightmare to work with, especially with The Shining. I'm sure he destroyed what ended up on the cutting room floor, but it would be fascinating to see an alternate cut of any of his movies made up of a different take of each scene. We could see if the hundreds of reshoots made a noticeable difference in the quality of acting and to the overall movie.
