Are there examples of mainstream movies that received critical acclaim but were not commercial successes?

I'm sure there are tons of indy movies that fit the bill, but I'm thinking of movies that were in tons of theaters across the country. I'd also like to exclude movies that have since become commercially successes after they left theaters. I'm sure there are some gems that a non-cinefile like myself might not know about.
