Everyone knows that on average, shorts don't make money.
But Oscar nommed shorts get heavy distribution help via shortsHD.
This means DVD, theatrical release, TV airtime and VOD streaming.
I'm guessing shortsHD take a heavy cut but I'd be amazed if the filmmakers weren't able to at least recoup their budgets.
Just check last years BO figures for the shorts here: http://ift.tt/2iV6djC
$2,837,748 = BOX OFFICE GROSS (all 15 shorts screened)
= $189K per film.
Again, I have no idea what the percentage breakdown is for ShortsHD but even if it was something as high as 50% that's still $95K for the filmmakers.
Only from box office as well, not counting DVD and VOD sales.
Anyone got more info on this? I think it would great for people to know if possible.
