My Thoughts on Dave Made A Maze (2017)

Remember when your parents would buy something big like a TV or furniture then you would build a cardboard fort out of the box it came out of, and it seemed like anything could happen in it? Well a couple of indie filmmakers decided to make a film based on this childhood experience, and film was titled "Dave Made A Maze". Dave Made A Maze is a Comedy-(Kinda)Horror obviously about Dave making a cardboard maze, but then Dave and his friends get lost in the maze and must escape before anything in the maze kills them all. This film exceeds on the most important thing of the film, the production. The cardboard world Dave creates is the best thing in the film. I want to live in Dave's bright magical cardboard world. It's not just a polished smooth world made up of cardboard. It's rough, there are dents, and it's simple and minimal. They made sure that every little detail in this world perfectly fits what a childhood fort looks like, and there are just so many details put into it. The world makes me want to brings me inner-child out and run around this maze once it's finish. If I have time on the weekend, I'm gonna build a cardboard fort as big as possible. Everything from the characters to the death scenes are pretty hilarious. The characters are good and the actors do their parts well, but there were some flaws in the writing of the characters and the actors as Dave and his girlfriend had some bland performances in a few scenes. (SPOILERS START) The Finnish Couple and the homeless man could've been cut from the film because they only get less than a minute on screen just for a couple jokes and we never know what happens to them, there's one moment in which a character sacrifices their life for no reason, and a character doesn't really act upset over seeing their lover die. (SPOILERS END) I still found the cast enjoyable to watch and the characters humorous. Dave Made A Maze is the most visually appealing film this year and it has earned a place as one of my favorite 2017 films, but it misses some marks that could've made it great. Now if you don't mind, I'm gonna go into my cardboard spaceship for a little while. 7/10
