It is disappointing how a gay character in Star Trek or Beauty and the Beauty can cause the uproar it did

It is somewhat strange considering how we have a fair number of characters in Television like Modern Family, This Is Us, Grey's Anatomy, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Shameless, Riverdale, Gotham and more.

Yet when it was announced Sulu in Star Trek was going to be gay or LeFou was going to be gay (which he wasn't technically, he was gay in the same style coded gay characters were in classic films, implied), uproar, viewers were shocked, countries either banned those films or went for a higher rating. Critics started going off on how almost every film features a gay character (?), it was the gay agenda shoving their gayness on the public's throat, you know, the usual silly stuff.

This isn't to say every person who had an issue with it didn't have a valid reason. Like, if you are a loyal Trekkie and you see a character whom you always identified as a heterosexual and even the actor who played Sulu was vocally against it, it is perfectly reasonable to be annoyed by it. Especially since they seemed to pick Sulu just because of who the actor.
