On Monday, I was lucky enough to see a free screening of IT in Washington DC. They even gave us some free stuff: http://ift.tt/2vKYeGJ
First of all, I'll just put your mind at ease right now: It's fantastic. I know people are often a little TOO positive when it comes to giving their exclusive reviews of early screenings, but in this case, I'm just genuinely relieved at how good it was. I don't remember the last time I saw a horror film in theaters before this, but the sense of terror and humor was intensified by a packed crowd.
As for the aforementioned humor, IT pulled off a comedic tone that I really wasn't expecting at all. The trailers certainly had humor, but it felt weird and cringeworthy. Thankfully it works wonderfully in the context of the film. The breakout star of the film is Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things) who plays Richie. He's the film's biggest source of comedy. The audience loved him. The chemistry of the kids and the overall tone felt very reminiscent of E.T., Stand By Me and The Goonies.
The only negative I can think of: The movie spends way too much time focusing on each kid's introductory interaction with Pennywise. It becomes a bit of a pacing issue. It's like an hour and 30 min into the movie before the kids realize that the "visions" of Pennywise that they've all been having are actually real. Still though, it's impressive that they managed to condense such a gigantic book into (hopefully) the first of two films without making it feel bloated or confusing.
And finally, regarding Pennywise: Bill SkarsgÄrd's performance is a mix of monstrous, childlike and omnipotent. He's fucking brutal. There are a lot of Pennywise scenes that take place during daylight, so you're not just constantly seeing him shrouded by darkness, which felt so refreshing and made it even creepier. This movie took full advantage of its R-rating.
