Basically the little boy is a mechanical genius, can fix clockwork things, pick door locks etc. etc... BUT cannot substitute something to put in the simple heart-shaped keyhole that activates the mechanical man.
The key is nothing special. It is just a simple cookie-cutter heart shape. No teeth/ridges on it. Finding a substitute shaped bar would work. The shape wouldnt even have to be heart-shaped.
