Do film studios purposely write in new characters solely for merchandise purposes?

Star Wars gets a lot of flack for this. But is there any evidence to suggest that writers are put under pressure by studio execs to squeeze in characters purely so that they can gain money from merchandise?

For example, in The Force Awakens C3PO has a red arm. A lot of cynical fans said he only had a red arm so that they'd be able to gain more interest in people buying a new C3PO figure. Or the new black BB-8 droid that is going to be in The Last Jedi. I often wonder if the writers are told 'hey, we have this great merchandising opportunity and think this toy will sell really well, make sure you include this new character in the script/story'.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this? I find it interesting that merchandise could in fact alter a lot of film's stories, which is a shame.
