I have great respect for Steven Spielberg for recognizing he did tone down certain aspects of the novel in the adaptation but that doesn't stop The Color Purple from being a beautiful, sad and moving film about a woman, Celie (Whoopi Goldberg),'s journey of servitude and abuse within the men of her life, from her father to husband, only finding happiness with other women, first her beloved sister, Nettie, to her husband's mistress and romantic interest, Shug Avery. Spielberg doesn't shy away from the violence inflicted on Celie but he also adds some humor and color which makes the fim bearable enough to enjoy. I loved Quincy Jones' score, so moving, and the performances? Whoopi Goldberg is famous for her comedies, but what an amazing dramatic actress she is. It's quite a restrained part for her which requires great subtlety since Celie, the adult, spends 75% of her screen time barely silent or mimicking her emotions but then when she lets it rip, you feel every bottled emotion she had come up and the result is sublime. And, of course, Oprah Winfrey got her big break as Sophia, deservedly getting an Academy Award nomination, by playing a woman who starts out as this strong woman whose strength ends up being her downfall and the result from it is quite tragic.
One of my favorite movies growing up.
